Legal
Terms.
Last updated · June 9, 2026
These are the terms for using coil. By using the service you agree to them. Email hello@coil.tattoo with questions.
The deal
coil gives you tools to run your tattoo business — site, inquiry inbox, deposit collection via Stripe Connect, aftercare automation, etc. You pay the monthly subscription. You can cancel any time.
Your account
- You're responsible for what happens under your account.
- One person per account. Don't share logins.
- You must be 18+.
- Don't use coil to do anything illegal.
Identity, slugs, and impersonation
When you claim a coil URL (the slug at yourname.coil.tattoo) you're promising the work and identity you're putting on it are actually yours.
- Don't claim a slug, display name, or Instagram handle that belongs to another artist.
- Don't upload someone else's tattoos or art as your portfolio.
- The “Sign in with Instagram” path is the verified path. It locks the slug to the IG account that signed in. The manual upload path doesn't verify ownership of any identity — if you misrepresent yourself there, you're violating these terms.
If we get a credible impersonation or stolen-work report against your account, we'll suspend it pending review. Confirmed violations result in permanent termination, no refund of subscription fees, and potential legal liability to the artist you misrepresented.
Want to report an account? Email hello@coil.tattoo with the URL and what's wrong (your IG handle for cross- reference helps).
Your work, your clients
- You own your portfolio, your bio, your inquiry data, your client list. We hold it for you, we don't take it.
- You give us a license to display, store, and process that content for the purpose of running coil for you (rendering your site, sending your aftercare, etc.).
- You're responsible for getting consent from your clients where it's required — SMS opt-in for aftercare, healed photo permission, that kind of thing. coil's aftercare templates include opt-out language.
- Don't upload anything you don't have rights to. Don't use coil to send unsolicited bulk SMS / spam.
Payments
- Subscription billing is monthly via Stripe. Cancel any time from your billing dashboard.
- Deposits collected from your clients flow through Stripe Connect direct to your bank. coil never holds those funds and never takes a percentage.
- You may optionally enable a card-processing surcharge that adds a transparent line item at Stripe Checkout for your clients to cover the card-network fee. Surcharging is legal in most US states but restricted in CT, MA, ME, and a few others; you are responsible for compliance with your jurisdiction's rules.
- Refunds on subscription fees are at our discretion — usually we won't fight you on it. Ping us.
AI features
Coil ships AI-assisted features — vision-model healing photo reads, style-fit scoring against your portfolio, a pricing coach that suggests quote ranges based on your historical jobs, and inquiry-reply drafts. These are decision-support tools, not autopilot. You retain final say on every quote, reply, and client interaction.
The AI is reasonable, occasionally wrong, and not a substitute for your own judgment. We do not warrant the accuracy of any AI output. Don't take medical advice from the healing watch — it is a heads-up for you, the artist, to follow up on concerning verdicts; clients with real medical concerns should see a doctor. We use rate limits and per-account spend ceilings to keep AI usage reasonable; we may temporarily throttle or pause AI features for an account exhibiting abusive or unusual patterns.
The portability moat (URL follows you)
When you join a shop on coil and that shop later removes you from the roster, your public URL at yourname.coil.tattoo stays live for 30 days and you have that window to subscribe to a solo plan. If you do, your portfolio, inquiry history, deposit records, reviews, waitlist, and touch-up credits all transfer with you. If you don't subscribe within 30 days, the public site goes into a passive “between shops” state and your data is held for a further 30 days before reactivation requires our help.
Shop accounts may not block or delay an artist's transition under these terms. Shops that interfere with the portability moat are in violation of the agreement; coil reserves the right to transition the artist on their behalf and suspend the shop's account pending resolution.
SMS, Twilio, and TCPA
Each artist on coil can provision a dedicated SMS number for client communication. The number is provisioned through Twilio on coil's parent account; you do not need a Twilio account.
- Service SMS (appointment reminders, aftercare, deposit links, healed-photo bounty, tip prompts, touch-up windows) sends when a client provides their phone number for an appointment-related purpose.
- Marketing SMS (next-piece nudges, flash drops, guest-spot announcements) sends only when the client has separately opted in via the dedicated checkbox on the inquiry form.
- All SMS respects standard opt-out keywords (
STOP,UNSUBSCRIBE,QUIT,CANCEL,REVOKE,OPT-OUT) and free-form opt-out phrases per FCC rules effective April 11, 2025. Honor period: ten business days. coil maintains a system-wide opt-out list keyed to each artist + recipient phone pair. - Coil enforces these rules in its outbound pipeline. Artists who attempt to bypass them (manually re-adding opted-out contacts, sending marketing SMS to clients who didn't opt in) are in violation of these terms and face immediate account suspension and potential TCPA liability of $500-1,500 per message.
Acceptable use
You may not:
- Use coil for content that's illegal where you operate
- Use the inquiry / aftercare SMS systems to send bulk messages to people who haven't opted in
- Reverse-engineer the platform, bypass auth, scrape
- Resell coil access without written permission
We can suspend or terminate accounts that violate these. If we do, we'll tell you why and give you a chance to fix it first unless the issue is severe.
Service availability
coil is software running on the internet. We try to keep it up and we monitor errors closely, but there's no SLA on this tier. Outages happen.
Changes to the service
We add and remove features over time. If we deprecate something you're actively using, we'll give notice. Pricing changes for existing accounts get at least 30 days' notice by email.
Cancellation
Cancel any time, self-serve, from billing. Your subscription runs to the end of the current billing cycle, then stops. Your data stays accessible for 30 days after cancellation in case you need it.
Disclaimers and liability
The service is provided “as is” — to the maximum extent permitted by law, we disclaim implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability for any claim arising out of or related to coil is capped at the greater of $100 or what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose. None of this limits liability for things the law doesn't let us limit.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the United States and the state in which the operator is principally based, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules.
